Susan Dean
The NHAA represents herbalists and naturopaths with a special interest in herbal medicine. It was established in 1920 and is the oldest complementary medicine organisation in Australia. In her role as president Susan's key responsibility was to negotiate with federal and state governments for the registration of herbal medicine practitioners. Susan was the herbal medicine practitioner contributor to the La Trobe University report The Practice and Regulatory Requirements of Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine, 2005, funded by the Department of Human Services, Victoria.

Whilst on the NHAA board, Susan visited over 20 institutions offering courses in herbal medicine or naturopathy to encourage them to improve their standards to meet those of the NHAA. She also represented herbalists on the federal industry reference group for complementary and alternative health care to advise on the development of a training package for western herbal medicine and relevant areas of other training packages developed for the Australian National Training Authority.
The NHAA honoured Susan in 2007 for having done meritorious work in the profession by elevating her to the status of Fellow. Susan is one of only 14 members of the association to have been awarded this honour.

In her practice Susan has a special interest in using herbal medicine with people undergoing conventional cancer treatment to help improve their treatment outcomes. She used opportunities in the master of health science to develop her understanding of the role herbal medicine can play when used concurrently with chemotherapy and will present a paper on aspects of this work at the NHAA conference in 2010.

Susan has made presentations on a range of topics for the NHAA annual seminar series, including ischaemic heart disease, endometriosis, childhood infectious diseases and vaccination, and psoriasis; and for a herbal medicine company on fibromyalgia.
Susan joined RMIT University in 2009 to coordinate the Herbs and Natural Supplements courses within the Master of Wellness program. She enjoys promoting the role of herbs and natural supplements in the wellness model of health care.
